A poem
It’s simple, like its subject. Read it slowly aloud, dear friend.
Oh, Tree
What universes do you contain,
Oh, tree?
Content to stand in a lane
Quietly.
What mysteries lie within
Your bedecked canopy?
Did anyone notice you
But me?
I fret you long to move,
And wander, too.
Don’t you feel stuck in a groove?
But why would you?
The world gambols through,
You host a happy menagerie,
Birds, bees, beetles,
Ants, butterflies, squirrels,
It’s a jamboree!
You take so little,
my tree.
Fruit, flowers, shelter,
The very breath of life,
You offer us free.
Such abundant pleasance!
And we give thee,
Nothing from our presence,
It’s plain to see.
Am I more important than you?
Why make of my nothing life
Such ado?
Why blow my fife
When your kindness was here,
Aeons before me!
I proclaim, in nature’s diadem,
You are the gentle gem,
Oh, tree.
